German Language Exercises
On the following pages, you will find exercises to help you apply the theoretical knowledge that you’ve acquired in the Tutorials to practical tasks.
These training exercises are divided into three thematic modules:
Exercises on important German-language dictionaries
When you engage with historical sources, you'll encounter many barriers to comprehension, the first of which is often a lack of common vocabulary. Philological research has put quite a few dictionaries at our disposal to help with this particular obstacle. These dictionaries were mostly begun in the 19th century; as a result, their construction and search mechanisms do not function exactly like those of modern dictionaries. In this set of exercises, you’ll learn how to work with three of these research tools.
Exercises on different phenomena in the history of language
This section addresses important phoenetic and morphological changes in historical forms of German with specific examples.
Exercises on word forms in historical sources
In this section, you will learn to analyze word forms in historical texts and to evaluate their phoenetic characteristics.
