Reading Japanese maps and marketing practices 5 - introduction
Let’s take the road that leads to Matsushima. This famous place is indicated with a black triangle on the lower-left side of the map. As in other cases, the map includes a waka poem related to Matsushima:
松島やこしまか磯による波の月の氷にちとりなくなり
(松島や 雄島か 磯による波の 月の氷に 千鳥鳴くなり)
However, in this case, the map includes not only poems, but also tips for the traveller. Look at the hiragana in the following phrase; can you see what these tips are about? Try confirming first if there is odoriji in the text.
